The Digit-al Dozen Does Spooky Days: Day One, The Graveyard

Hi everyone! The Digit-al Dozen is doing a second week this month - this time it's spooky, Halloween themed nail art. Also we've got a fun giveaway going on. I may not be able to do five posts but I want to try to get in one or two more posts before Friday. Today's mani is a very quintessential Halloween look, since I don't often do Halloween nail art, I thought I'd start with the basics.

Halloween Guest Post at Seize The Nail

Hi everyone! I had the wonderful honour of doing a guest post over at Seize The Nail. I've been a fan of Bella's beautiful nails and makeup looks for awhile now, and it's no wonder she's become such a popular nail artist on Instagram. I was asked to do a Halloween themed post so I turned to the infamous candy corn as my inspiration. Want to know how I feel about candy corn? Well you'll have to check out the post! ;)

What do you think of this? Let me know either here or over at Bella's blog!

Edit: I've submitted this look to the Nail Polish Canada Halloween Nail Art Contest, if you like my design you can vote for me HERE. Thanks!

31 Day Challenge: Day Twenty-Nine, Inspired by the Supernatural: Dark Willow

Hi everyone! I have my second Halloween-related nail art post for you tonight. Ideally I would have posted this before Halloween, but it's just been one of those weeks!

This is actually one of those challenges I've been looking forward to for awhile. I'm not too big on the supernatural, but over the summer I devoured all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer - my first time watching the show. Even though the show is over ten years old, and some of the special effects are a bit dated, it's still pretty awesome. It's one of those shows where I felt lost and sad once I had finished all the episodes.

Guest Post at Lacquered by Blue Vanilla

Happy Halloween everyone! So far I haven't done any Halloween nail art on this blog, however, I did do a guest post over at Lacquered by Blue Vanilla - a blog by Bethanie and Xin Yu, two friends from Singapore. They had a series of guest posts and the theme was, naturally, Halloween! It's a great series, so make sure to check it out!

Head on over to my guest post to read about this nail art design and see more pictures. Can you guess what book I took as my inspiration? If you don't know you'll have to find out over at Xin Yu and Bethanie's blog. ;)

What do you think of this? Did you do any nail art for Halloween?

Different Dimension, Silenced the Lambs - Halloween 2013 Collection

Hi everyone! Are you ready for some new Different Dimension polishes!? Ever since I saw the first swatches online of the Different Dimension Fall and Halloween collections, I've been really excited about these polishes. So you can imagine how giddy I was to open up my blogger package from Missi, the maker, and see these in person. If you've passed over these new collections, I encourage you to take a second look. I have the Halloween collection for you tonight, and I hope to have the Fall 2013 collection up next week.

Different Dimension, Silenced the Lambs - Halloween 2013 Collection

As you may guess from the title, the Halloween collection is inspired by the film Silence of the Lambs. Fun fact: Silence of the Lambs was originally released on Valentine's Day (creepy!) and nowhere near Halloween. :)

Good Evening Clarice is a pale mint linear holo polish that also glows in the dark. The holo is subtle but still noticeable and adds a nice effect to the polish - in most lights it will look shimmery. Formula-wise it goes on very smooth and evenly, however, I found even after three coats I still had some patches where the coverage was less than I hoped.

As for the glow-in-the-dark properties, the instructions state that you can layer this over white for a stronger effect, however, I found it was pretty strong on its own. It's stronger if you charge it first, but you only need to do so for about 30 seconds.

Different Dimension Good Evening Clarice

Have The Lambs Stopped Screaming? is a clear-based glitter topper with a holographic shimmer, and a mixture of black, white, orange, gold and yellow glitter in stars, circles, squares and hexes. Missi describes this as looking like a "deconstructed monarch butterfly" and I rather like that description. The application was great and there was no problem getting out the larger glitters. This was 2 coats over Girly Bits Giggity Giggity Goo.

I Ate His Liver With Some Fava Beans And a Nice Chianti (longest polish name ever!) is another glitter topper. This one is also clear-based with green, chartreuse, purple, lavender, pink, gold and black glitter in hexes, circles and stars. I love the colours on this one, and the application was great. This was 1 coat over Essie Full Steam Ahead, but I've also seen it paired with Good Evening Clarice and I really love that combination.

It Rubs The Lotion On Its Skin is a black jelly-based polish with gold and orange microglitter. This is described as a texture polish, but I didn't experience any texture with this, so I wore it as a regular polish with top coat. While it looks a bit dull in the lightbox photos, it really comes alive in regular light, and especially direct light (the sun would have the same effect). The application was great - it goes on smooth and evenly, and has a perfect consistency. This was 2 coats.

I've mentioned this before, but I'm not really one for Halloween polishes. Yet, these make me change my mind. Have The Lambs... is so shimmery and Good Evening Clarice is such a unique colour and polish. The other ones are also great. Overall, I think this is a very strong collection.

What do you think of these? Are you in the mood for Halloween polishes yet?

Different Dimension is available on Etsy, and through Llarowe, Mei Mei's Signatures, Edgy Polish, and Ledoux Nuage. Follow Different Dimensions on Facebook and Instagram (@missibarry) to keep up with updates.

Pretty & Polished Halloween Collection, Swatches and Review

Hi everyone! I have the new Pretty & Polished Halloween collection for you today! Pretty & Polished is an indie brand that's been around for quite some time, and I've bought them in the past and always been happy with their formula. They have a great selection of glitters, thermals, and crellies with glitter, and in the past year they've introduced bath and body products such as cuticle oils and balms, bath scrubs and bath bombs. Right now everything is on sale so make sure to check out their store.

I was pleasantly surprised with all three polishes. Sometimes indie polishes with glitter can be lumpy and difficult to apply. But I found the formula on these to be excellent, and they had just the right amount of glitter in them - making them easy to apply and quite smooth on the nail.

One note about the labels - mine came without labels on them, but I'm sure that wouldn't be the case if you ordered them. In the past I've found that if I have a customer service question for Pretty & Polished, Chels, the maker was pretty fast to respond to my questions.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? is a black jelly-based polish with different sizes of teal hexes; red, fuchsia, and wine coloured circles; and teeny red squares. This is supposed to be opaque in 2-3 coats, but I found the base to be a bit sheer so I layered two coats over a black creme. I like how it turned out and I think it makes the glitter stand out.

Death By Candy Corn is an yellow-to-red thermal polish. At normal room temperature it will be orangish-yellow, and it turns red when it gets cold. The glitter is fun with a mixture of yellow hexes, white rectangles, small orange squares, and red-orange hexes. The application was great and the glitters are perfectly suspended. I used three coats here.

In order to change the colour, I ended up sticking my hands in ice cold water. I love how dramatic the change is, however, I did find that it went back to it's original colour pretty fast after I took my hands out of the water (hence having water on my hands in these photos). I think this polish would be more fun to wear in the colder weather when there is more of a temperature change.

Glowstick is a neon grass green jelly with small and medium orange-red hexes plus tiny, small and medium kelly green hexes. The application was great - the polish goes on very smooth and the glitter is perfectly suspended in the polish. I used three coats here and there's still some visible nail line, so wear a base polish if you don't care for that.

The polish glows green in the dark, and I love the mottled effect with the glitter. For these photos I charged the polish for a bit under my daylight lamp (not for long - just 30 seconds or so). I love that you get a pretty strong GITD effect.

If you like Halloween polishes, you should definitely check these out. And for a very limited time they are on sale! I'm not normally a Halloween person, but these do kinda get me in the mood. :)

Pretty & Polished is available from their online store and Etsy shop. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter for updates and new releases.
