GOT Polish Challenge, Coral: Simple Spring Nails With Dior Spring Ball

Hi everyone! At first I wasn't sure if I could participate in today's Golden Oldies Challenge. I couldn't recall if I owned any corals that fit the requirements (close to a year old, already tried). But a simple "find" search in the good ol' stash spreadsheet revealed that I had at least 10 that fit the bill. Oops!

I ended up settling on Dior Spring Ball, and I knew that I wanted to do something that was simple and classy. I really love how this turned out, and it has a very feminine, springtime feel to it.

Dior Vernis Mystic Metallics Fall 2013: Destin and Galaxie

Hi everyone! I was in Sephora the other day when the new Dior collection caught my eye. The Mystic Metallics collection for fall plays on the beauty of shimmer, with smokey greys, teals, and dramatic contrasts. It consists of several single eyeshadows (called "Diorshow fusion mono"), a five shadow compact, four Dior Addict Glosses, two Addict Extreme lipsticks, and three polishes. One of the polishes is a magnetic one, which I didn't see it at the store, but I'll admit I'm not into the magnetics trend. I did managed to get the other two polishes - Destin and Galaxie.

Dior Vernis Galaxie 992 and Destin 382

I'm very quickly developing a love for Dior polishes, despite the fact that I really don't have the income right now to support such a habit. They've always impressed me with beautiful but classic colours, nice packaging, and stellar formula. The brushes are wide and rounded so it is easy to apply a nice line along the cuticles, making the application even easier.

Dior Vernis Galaxie 992 and Destin 382

These two shades are no exception. In fact, the whole collection is gorgeous. I also went home with one of the Addict Gloss shades - Ensourcelante 981, highly recommended - and I'm tempted to pick up the five shadow compact (maybe if I rob a bank...just kidding!).

Destin (382) is a neutral taupe with a very noticeable silver shimmer. If I ever have to work in an office with a conservative dress code, this would be at the top of my list for an appropriate nail polish. Although it's a neutral colour, I don't consider it to be boring. The application and formula was perfect - it went on very smooth and was completely self-leveling. This was two coats.

Galaxie (992), no surprise, was the one that caught my eye initially. It's a deep maroon with a very subtle blue-red-fuchsia shimmer. The shimmer is not very noticeable, but does give the polish a beautiful luminosity. It's one of those polishes that I think would look good on almost anyone, and I instantly found it flattering and appealing. The formula is also perfect on this one. I used two coats but it's almost a one-coater. It went on very smooth and evenly.

I know a number of people have commented that these polishes are out of their price range. Hopefully you don't mind me showing them. If that's your situation, but you ever get the chance to splurge or can save up for a high end polish, I do recommend Dior polishes. Although my experience is rather limited, I have yet to be disappointed by them.

What do you think of these? Have you seen the new Mystic Metallics collection?

31 Day Challenge: Day Sixteen, Tribal: Dior Matte Tribal Nail Art

Hi everyone! I'm back to posting, and even though I only took the long weekend off, I think it's the longest I've gone without posting in a long time! It was weird, but felt very good to have that break. Since I'm still technically a student and work at a university, September, with the start of the school year, always feels like a fresh start. In terms of this blog, I want to get back to setting goals for myself (nothing outrageous of course), and thinking about ways to make this space better.

In the meantime, I'm still chugging along with the 31 Day Challenge. I recently got my hands on two of the polishes from the Dior Mystic Metallics collection - Destin (382), a taupe shimmer, and Galaxie (992), a deep wine coloured shimmer. For tribal nails I wanted to do something simple, like a nude base with just black lines. But in the end, I thought using these two Dior polishes with black lines would be a good idea.

The base is Dior Destin, and I added some accents of Galaxie. All lines were done with black polish and a thin liner brush. Both Dior polishes are gorgeous shimmery colours but unfortunately the shimmer gets lost with the matte top coat I added. I'm very happy with the line work, and I think that aspect is strong, but I wish I had left the glossy top coat on.

What do you think of these nails? Do you like doing tribal nails?

Dior Vernis Sparkling Shine 2013 Collection, Swatches and Review

Hi everyone! The Dior Sparkling Shine collection came out several months ago (March maybe?), and while it was love at first sight, I held off buying them right away. Let's face it, one or two Dior polishes is a nice splurge for me, but four...ouch! Luckily I was able to get these with Shoppers Optimum points, and it was well worth the wait.

This collection consists of four glossy, shimmery polishes perfect for spring and summer. There are also four corresponding Dior Addict Gloss lip glosses, which I wasn't able to get.

Dior Vernis Sparkling Shine Collection

The formula on all of these was great. They go on very smooth and evenly, requiring 2-3 coats for full coverage. I didn't have any issues with streaking and they dry to a glossy shine, of course I put top coat on them anyways. All four have the same shimmer - it's a silver/gold/pink shimmer that some bloggers have called "glass flecked". The shimmer is what really makes these polishes stand out for me, and they are the perfect complement to the Dior Addict Gloss lip glosses - which I'm totally in love with.

The only down side of these polishes, in my opinion, is the brush. It's a wide, thick, rounded brush that should be perfect for applying polish with minimal strokes. However, I find it holds way too much polish, and is a bit too big for my smaller nails, therefore, I had a hard time keeping the polish out of my cuticles.

Délice (433) is a light coral-red with flecks of silver, peach, pink, and gold shimmer. I didn't think I would like this, but it's very saturated and bright - the perfect colour for summer. I used three coats here.

Diablotine (643) is a cherry red with slight magenta undertones and a red, pink, and gold shimmer. This is by far my favourite out of the four, and for me the perfect red for any time of the year. I only needed two coats for full coverage.

Princess (553) is a dusty pink with a silver, pink, and gold shimmer like the others. It's a very feminine colour without being too bright. I used two coats here but there's still some thin patches, so three would be preferable.

Spring Ball (343) is a light peach hue that leans slightly towards pink. It has the same shimmer as the others. I found it more saturated than Princess, and very flattering with my skin tone. I used three coats for these swatches.

Overall, I'm very happy with this collection. The colours are gorgeous and flattering and the formula on all four is excellent. If you don't mind splurging for Dior polishes, it's worth picking up at least one to have in your collection. My favourite is Diablotine, followed closely by Spring Ball.

Which one is your favourite? Did you pick up any of these polishes?

Seven Deadly Sins Challenge, Day 5: Greed

Hi everyone! I'm still standing when it comes to this challenge, sort of! ;) Yesterday was a big day blogging wise, so I decided to take it easy for today's challenge. Here's the prompt for day five: "Go wild and use your most expensive and precious polish."

Simple damask design nail art

For today's challenge I went with a base of Dior Diva 901 from the Grand Bal 2012 Holiday collection. It's not my most expensive polish, but it's one of my more precious polishes. I'll be the first to admit that I bought this for the packaging and the luxurious look of the product.

Dior Diva 901
Dior Diva 901

Diva is a warm-toned black with a micro-shimmer that appears to have a slight olive and rose tint - it's a very unique combination. I needed three coats for full coverage. Formula-wise it went on fairly smooth, although it had a bit of a gritty texture - perhaps because of the shimmer? Unfortunately, the shimmer that is so prominent and enticing in the bottle gets lost on the nails. I wouldn't say it's my favourite black, but it holds a special place in my collection for that gorgeous bottle!

On top I did some freehand simple damask patterns using Chanel Diwali. Again, not my most expensive polish, but definitely one of my most precious - it was a birthday gift from my mother and step-father (thanks guys!). Poor them, little do they know that I've already started compiling my birthday wish-list for this year, and I'm a December baby! Lol! :P

I really love Diwali, and I should probably show a swatch of this sometime. It's a beautiful, shimmery gold with great coverage. I love that, for a gold, it's not very yellow in tone. Unfortunately both Diva and Diwali were limited edition and no longer available, so eBay would be your best bet for finding these.

Now that I've rambled on plenty, I will wrap up this blog post. I didn't use my most expensive polish, and I don't know if I went wild with this design, but somehow I think I fulfilled today's challenge.

What do you think of today's design? How would you take on the theme of greed? :)

Dior Bird of Paradise Collection Vernis Nail Duo in Bahia (002): Swatches and Review!

Hi everyone! I was hoping to have day two of the Seven Deadly Sins nail challenge, but that didn't happen. Instead I have the second duo from the Dior Bird of Paradise collection. If you missed my review of Samba, the first duo, you can find that here.

Dior Vernis Nail Duo in Bahia (002), Bird of Paradise Collection

If you already have similar colours in your collection, you might want to pass on these. But if not it might be worth it to take a closer look. Both polishes have a superior formula that, at least in my book, make them worth the extra cost. I found the colours very rich in colour, flattering, and perfect in every way.

Like the first duo, these polishes do not have names, so just numbers are given. All swatches are with a coat of Seche Vite. Also, I've taken photos under direct light and in my light box so you can get a better sense of how the polish looks.

Bahia 667 is a hot pink creme, it's very saturated and intense in terms of colour, but it's not quite a neon. This is actually a re-release. It was originally called Pink Graffiti and was part of the Anselm Reyle limited edition collection. At least the bottle number is the same and it looks like the same polish. So if you missed it before, you have a second chance! ;) And thanks to @thepolishowl on Instagram who originally told me about this!

Bahia 792 is a blue creme that leans slightly towards a teal blue. It's absolutely gorgeous. Only downside is that this one is slightly staining.

The formula on both was the same. Both only needed two coats for full opacity. They went on very smooth, with no streaking, and were perfectly self-levelling. They have a flawless finish with a high shine, even without top coat. The polishes in the Bahia duo have everything I would want in a creme polish.

Like the Samba duo, these are 7ml/0.23fl. oz. minis. In Canada it retails for $30.

What do you think of this? Out of the two Dior duos, which one is your favourite?

Peacock Nail Art Using the Dior Vernis Nail Duo in Samba

Hi everyone! I promised you some nail art when I reviewed the Dior Vernis Nail Duo from the Bird of Paradise collection (if you missed that you can find it here). I meant to post this yesterday but it got too late. :(

If you've seen the promotional ads for the Bird of Paradise collection, you will know why I went with the peacock theme. I didn't have a lot of time, and I was doing a full mani, so I wanted to keep this simple. Sometime I'd love to do a peacock design that is more elaborate, but that will have to be filed under "someday" for now.

Peacock nail art

I used only four polishes for this design: the Dior Vernis Nail Duo in Samba (polish numbers 402 and 794), OPI Vant To Bite My Neck? (dark eggplant creme), and Orly Luxe (a gold foil metallic).

Peacock nail art

Everything was done freehand. In case you're interested, here's how I went about painting this. For the peacock feather on my middle finger I drew in the feather with the OPI, then I painted in the top part of the feather with the Dior 794. I went over the feather a second time with the OPI, added a dab of the Orly, then finally Dior 794 on top of the OPI as an accent.

For the thumb I did an abstract peacock design. I started by painting in the feather shapes with Dior 794. Then I outlined them with the OPI, then finished with a touch of the Orly in each feather.

Peacock nail art

The studs are from the Born Pretty Store, and you can read my review of them here. I've found this stud set so useful and have used it many times! Don't forget to use my coupon code MSL91 to get 10% off. They have free shipping worldwide with no minimum order!

Peacock nail art

Until I can do some tutorials, here's a few tips regarding freehand nail art that I've picked up in the past few months. First, try to get the best nail art brushes that you can. Sometimes it takes buying a few brushes before you find the one that's right for you. I'm thinking about doing a post in the future about brushes, if you are interested, let me know and I'll make it a priority. In the meantime a lot of other bloggers have done posts on the topic. Second, I use nail polish thinner to make the polish more fluid and workable. It also "revives" dried polish that's on your palette, so you don't waste as much polish. And finally, don't try to get your lines right the first time. I often start out with a very light line, then go over it once or twice more.

Peacock nail art

Overall, I'm really happy with how this turned out, and I find it very elegant. I was planning to do some swatching and nail art today, but nixed that because I didn't want to take this off!

What do you think of this?

Dior Bird of Paradise Collection Vernis Nail Duo in Samba (001): Swatches and Review!

Hi everyone! I was in The Bay a few days ago and I saw the new Bird of Paradise collection from Dior. The collection includes a variety of products - blush, lipstick, eyeliner, eyeshadow, etc. - but more relevant to my interests, and this blog, where the two nail lacquer duos. These are mini sized duos that are billed as "summer nail lacquer duo for tips & toes." Each duo consists of two 7ml/0.23 fl. oz. polishes in the signature Dior bottle. According to the Sales Associate at the Dior counter, these polishes are very limited edition, and not part of the core collection. However as we'll see with the second duo, one of these polishes has been released previously.

Dior Bird of Paradise Collection Vernis Nail Duo in Samba (001)

While my logical left brain told me I shouldn't be splurging on these, my emotional right brain said "go for it!" Lol. So right brain won this time, and I bought both duos. I'm showing you the first one today, and the second one I will show you later this week.

The individual polishes don't have names, so I'll be referring to them by their bottle numbers. All swatches are with a coat of Seche Vite. Edit: I noticed that photos have a slightly off appearance when viewing them in the blog post. Viewing the photos in the lightbox mode is recommended. To do that simply click on any photo.

Dior Bird of Paradise Collection Vernis Nail Duo in Samba (001)

402 is a pale jade creme. On the Dior website it's labelled a "sea blue," however, I don't agree with that description. I find this to be such an amazing hue. I don't normally gravitate to colours like this, but I fell instantly in love once it was on. The formula is perfection and it went on very creamy and smooth and was completely self-levelling. I used two coats for these swatches, and I was just in awe of how easy it applied, and how flawless it looked.

(note: I don't know why this looks so different from the other photo,
but they were similar in my photo editing program)

794 is the stunner of the collection, and the one that has caught every body's eyes. This is a metallic teal green with an electric green shimmer. While there is a slight shift towards blue, I wouldn't call this a true duochrome. The formula on this one was also perfect, and I used two coats here. You do have to have a bit of a steady hand as the brushstrokes are slightly visible, but it is very minimal. One issue I had was slight shrinkage at the tips after applying top coat. I didn't have that issue with my other swatches from this collection, so I believe it's something about the makeup of the polish itself.

Comparisons: In searching my collection I did manage to find a few polishes that were close to these, however, there's no dupes here.

Dior 402 Comparison

  • Pinky/Index: Dior 402 was a shade darker than the other two, it also had the best formula out of the three shown here.
  • Ring: Models Own Jade Stone is a shade lighter than the Dior but very similar. This was three coats.
  • Middle: Essie Turquoise & Caicos is lighter and more sheer than the others. It also is a tad more muted in colour. Out of the three this had the worst formula, very sheer and almost watery, but three coats for full coverage.
L-R: Dior, Essie, Models Own, and Dior

I also have bottle shots, which include Sally Hansen Mint Sorbet. The Sally Hansen is much lighter than the Dior as you can see.

Dior 794 Comparison
  • Pinky/Index: Dior 794
  • Ring: China Glaze Unpredictable I thought would be similar based on the bottle but this is not close at all. It's more of a green-gold base with slight blue duochrome.
  • Middle: Sally Hansen Scarab (Lustre Shine line) is the closest to the Dior, and very similar in formula, but the Sally Hansen is more blue than the Dior.
L-R: Dior, Sally Hansen, China Glaze, and Dior

According to promotional material I've seen, this collection is supposed to be available in May, but as I said, I found it already on display. I was also told that it was very limited edition, so if you are interested you might want to keep your eye out for it. I paid $30 CAD for each duo.

What do you think of this duo? Are you tempted to buy it? Stay tuned tomorrow and I'll have some nail art using this duo!!
