The Digit-al Dozen Does Fairy Tales, Day Two: The Star Money by Brothers Grimm

Hi everyone! How are you enjoying the Digit-al Dozen members' fairy tale-inspired designs? I don't know about you, but I find it interesting to see what the other Digit-al Dozen members have come up with, and what stories inspired them. For day two, I have another new-to-me fairy tale - The Star Money by Brothers Grimm.

The story:

The Star Money is a story about a poor, orphaned girl. She is homeless and has no belongings except for her clothes and a loaf of bread. She's wandering through the countryside and comes across others who are hungry or in need of clothes, so she gives away her only possessions - the loaf of bread and all the clothes she is wearing. By then it is nighttime and she's left with nothing. Suddenly some of the stars fall from the sky and they become pieces of money, she also has been made a new shirt out of the finest linen. And she is rich for the rest of her life.

The design:

I imagined the moment when the girl is looking up at the stars in the night sky. I love this line from the story (English translation of course):
And as she so stood, and had not one single thing left, suddenly some stars from heaven fell down...

To get this look:

Like yesterday's design, I painted everything freehand in acrylics. I like to sketch out the design, add some colour, and then go over the lines where needed. I also used some watercolour technique where I'll paint on some thinned acrylic, then clean my brush, dip it in water, and spread the colour around.

Final thoughts:

The hardest part of this design was the face of course. I redid it twice before I got it right. At first I was trying to be very precise in my profile, but the third time, I use a slightly heavier touch and the side of my brush. And I love how it turned out, much better than trying to be cautious!

  2. This mani is just beautiful! The girls face is really great. Star Money, or since I'm German "Sterntaler" has always beendet my favourite fairy tale!

    1. Thank you! Startaler - I like that name. For some reason I thought it translated to "tailor" but I see it's a kind of money. :)

  10. This story is new to me ... I love how you've created the girls face. It reminds me a little of the E H Shephard drawings for Winnie the Pooh; it has a similarly sketchy style. Lovely. :)

  23. you have this incredible ability to make what you do look like it's not been done on the nail or with polish. I can see this as a sketched tryptych in a gallery
