31 Day Challenge 2.0: Day 12, Intricate

Hi everyone! You may or may not remember the 31 Day Challenge I was doing with The Nail Polish Challenge and Wondrously Polished. Well we decided to take a wee break to catch up on some other stuff. That little break turned into two months (oops!). But we're back with intricate nails, and for that I decided to break out some gorgeous pastel polishes from UNT that were sent to me by Live Love Polish. LLP is an online retailer in New York that has very fast and affordable shipping and a great selection of colourful polishes.

About this design:

I knew I wanted to incorporate these pastel polishes from UNT in some sort of intricate floral design. These pastel shades are a nice break from the darker colours that are typical in the winter, so expect to see swatches and a few more looks in the next week or two. I finally decided on doing something simple, but with intricate line work. The pastels provided a nice background for that.

To get this look:

  • Base: UNT Lost Road Map (taupe)
  • Background: UNT Jealousy (mint), Heartbreaker (bubblegum pink), and Breakup Blues (pastel blue with iridescent shimmer). Used watercolour technique to add colours to the background.
  • Flowers: Black acrylic paint
  • Brush: Winsor Newton Sceptre Gold II #0000
  • Top Coats: Girly Bits What a Rush and Essie Matte About You

Final thoughts:

I love everything about this design - the colours, the simplicity, the intricate lines, and the contrast between the flowers and pastel background. Also, I'm trying out a new top coat (Girly Bits) and I was so pleased with the results here. I made sure the acrylic was dry thoroughly, and I had absolutely no smearing with the top coat.

UNT polishes are available from Live Love Polish. They ship internationally for a low cost of $9 (free over $100). And their US shipping is very affordable - free over $20, and $5 for orders under $20.

What do you think of this look? Do you like intricate nail art?

    1. Thanks Novi! Depending on the type of brush you might have better results with acrylics. I originally tried the lines with nail polish and that didn't work out too well. :/

  4. I love the combination of the simple background with the detailed flowers, it's so pretty. How do you do the watercolor technique, is it with a sponge? Do you have a tutorial somewhere?

    1. Thanks Nadia! By watercolour technique I mean I use nail polish thinner to thin the polish and swoosh it around with your brush. Just use a light hand and it also helps to do a quick dry top coat to seal your base colour before doing the watercolour technique. So you don't lift the base polish off. I hope that makes sense, and I hope to do a tutorial someday - although my poppy video on IG is somewhat similar.
