About this design:
I've been drawing and painting ever since I was a little girl. I was fortunate to have parents that recognized my interests and encouraged them - they bought me real art supplies and sent me to art lessons. There were years during middle school and high school where I did other things, like drama and music, but eventually I came back to drawing and painting. That led to me going to art school, and art school led to art history, which led to graduate school, which brings me up to where I'm at today.

Several times over the years I've tried to take up drawing and painting again but it gets pushed aside for life reasons. So for now, I love doing nail art because it's a way for me to stay creative. But I can't discount the central role that art has played in my life. I truly believe that the arts are important to society and must be fostered as much as the sciences, business, health care and so on.

To get this look:
I often spend hours doing my nail art designs for Digit-al Dozen week, so this one was surprisingly easy. I used nail polish thinned with thinner for most of this. The "brushstrokes" were relatively easy, it was just a matter of keeping it fairly loose and not trying to paint too much. I didn't do any mixing with this design because I wanted to keep the colours pure.

Final thoughts:
I feel like this is not my usual style, but I really loved how it turned out. I think it conveys the theme of art rather simply. I also love that it's bright and cheerful.
What do you think of this? Have the arts touched your life?

These look great. Love the watery look to them.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lisa!
DeleteOhh I love these nails too! I feel like that's all I've been commenting on your past couple of posts haha. But these are so fun!
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting to me where art ends up leading people, like you went to art school and then got into art history. I always liked art as a kid and now I'm in my senior year of college studying to be a graphic designer. I miss the days of being able to sit down and paint/draw whatever, but I like where I am and nail art has become that fall back for me as well. It's a bit frightening trying to figure out where to go from here though haha!
Thanks Marisa! And it's interesting to hear where you ended up with your art background. I know I was encouraged to do something more "practical" like graphic design or illustration, but I really tried to resist. I'm still figuring out where this is going to take me, since I don't currently have work in art history. So I agree it's very scary indeed. :)
DeleteLove everything about this post! The design is beautiful and meaningful, and your words are important and eloquent! xo
ReplyDeleteThanks Victoria. I felt it needed a bit of backstory without overwhelming people too much. Haha.
DeleteThis is very cheerful and fun! And yes, we couldn't "live" without art I think. I love going to a museum and learning so much about other times.
ReplyDeleteThanks Deborah. And I couldn't agree more. I don't go to museums as often as I used to, but it's still one of my preferred things to do when I have some free time.
DeleteI basically agree with everything you said haha I agree that it's not your typical style, but it is still very much "you" and I like that! It's beautiful! I so agree that arts and nurturing a creative spark is so important. Creativity is important in all fields and the arts should never be discredited. Can't wait to see what you do for day 5!
ReplyDeleteThanks Lindsey! I definitely agree, thinking creatively also helps for more analytical disciplines. So I hate when it gets discredited, or cut from school programs. :/
DeleteAnd day 5 is coming soon, I'm soooo behind!
Lovely, both in execution and in sentiment! Without art, there is no "life", and that spans the genres. I can't imagine my life without music. It's all important and I agree with everything you said... and I loved reading how your talent and passion has evolved throughout your life :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Liesl, and I couldn't agree more. So well put! :)
DeleteThat's a beautiful, sunny manicure!
ReplyDeleteThanks Aprill! :)
DeleteThis is so beautiful! I'm thankful for YOUR art!! :D
ReplyDeleteAwww, thanks Emily! :)
