About this design:
Although I love my morning cup of joe, I don't really consider myself a coffee snob. The no name and instant varieties are out of the question, but I'm perfectly happy with store brands like Maxwell House or whatever is on sale. So no organic-special-roast-what-not for me!

I kind of envisioned this like a messy desk seen from above. On my index you can see the coffee cup, you have some coffee stains, and a spoon with more coffee stains on the pinky. When I told another blogger about this she said "so you're thankful for coffee stains?" Ummmm no. I guess neat people would not get this. ;)

To get this look:
I wanted to try my hand at something fairly realistic looking. I painted everything freehand using polish and nail polish thinner. I should probably explain how I did it, but at this time of night it really escapes me! If you have any questions though, please let me know!

Here's the polishes I used for this look:
- White: Cult Nails Tempest
- Black: Cult Nails Nevermore
- Grey: China Glaze Five Rules (also mixed black and white)
- Silver: Essie No Place Like Chrome
- Coffee: Franken

Final thoughts:
My original idea for coffee was to do something along the lines of my sushi nails - very cute and outlined. But in the end I went for more realism. I really love how this turned out, and I hope it will push me to do more stuff like this!
What do you think of this? Are you a coffee lover too?

This is SOOO pretty and artistic! And very realistic looking :D
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm glad I went with the more realistic look. :)

DeleteI'm not a fan of coffee (I know, I'm in the minority :) ), but I am in LOVE with this mani! You absolutely captured the POV you were going for and I thought the coffee stains were a genius addition. I would like to know the techniques you used. I'm guessing detail brush and some sponging?
ReplyDeleteHaha that's okay! I know plenty of others who don't drink coffee.
DeleteAnd to answer your question, I was *so* tired when I typed this up, I know my description was very lame. For the background I used a bit of CG Five Rules, and used nail polish thinner to brush it on in a watercolour type of way. I just spread around some of the polish thinned with a lot of thinner. For the coffee stains it's also a watercolour type effect. You dab on a bit of colour, clean off your brush, then dip it in a bit of nail polish thinner, and use that to spread the polish - I would then paint the rings with the thinned brown polish. I hope this helps. I'm hoping to do a tutorial about this when I can find the time, but lately it's just been really hectic. :/
I want to be you when I grow up. (even though I'm pretty sure I am old enough to be your mother!) This is spectacular. Truly.
ReplyDeleteWell I'm still trying to figure out who I want to be when I grow up, but when I find out, I'll let you know. Lol!
DeleteAnd thank you Sheila, that's really sweet. :)
This is really fantastic! Although I'm not a coffee drinker myself, there's something very artistic about coffee stained cup rings haha
ReplyDeleteThank you, and I agree. I found so many coffee stain designs while perusing for stock images for this.
