Spell Polish Eye of Newt, Lizard's Leg, and Tongue of Dog: Swatches and Review

Hi everyone! Today I have a brand that's new to this blog. Spell Polish comes out of New York, and I'll admit I was really excited when the maker Heatheraven contacted me. This brand has some of the best packaging in the industry (as you can see from this nail mail photo on my Instagram), and every time I look at the site, I get serious logo envy. But they also have a wide array of fun colours including holos, shimmers, glitters, multi chromes, and neons. I was sent three polishes from the "A Charm of Powerful Trouble" collection inspired by Macbeth.

Spell Polish: Lizard's Leg, Tongue of Dog, Eye of Newt

Formula and application:

Spell Polish is 5-free and comes in a narrow, rectangular bottle much like the American Apparel polishes. The brush is long, but standard size, it fans out a bit so it almost feels like a flat brush.

I found the formula on these to be very good, but also a bit tricky. The brushes load up with a lot of polish so I had to be careful to do thinner coats. Also with all three, the polish wants to pull away slightly from the tips. So make sure to wrap your tips carefully and use a top coat that doesn't cause shrinkage.

Swatches:

Eye of Newt is a blue shimmer with a subtle scattered holo. I love the scattered holo on this as it's really delicate but also very noticeable. It looks a bit brushstroke-y in my pictures but it didn't look that way in person. And I love the blue colour, it's quite striking and I can see it being useful for nail art. I used 2 coats for these swatches.

Lizard's Leg is a dark steel blue holo. The linear holo effect is fairly strong on this one, without overpowering the colour. With so many holos on the market, it's hard to come up with one that is unique, but I don't feel I've seen one quite like this. And the coverage is great. I used 2 coats for these swatches.

Tongue of Dog is blue-purple shimmer with subtle pink micro flakes. The colour is a bit like a duochrome, in some lights this polish looks blue, in others more blurple. The pink flakes are incredible and so unique. They are very teeny tiny, so not very visible, but they do have an interesting effect, adding flecks of colour. Again, this looks a bit brushstroke-y in my photos but not so much in person. I used 2 coats for these swatches.

Final thoughts:

Spell Polish retails for $17 for 15ml, and is a bit pricier than many other indies. But knowing how much work goes into making indie polish I don't mind so much. It's obvious that Heatheraven puts a lot of care and work into her polishes, packaging and images. I would say that these would be great polishes to treat yourself with when you want to splurge.

Spell Polish is available through their website, or through their international stockists. A Charm of Powerful Trouble collection is available now and you can buy them individually or as a limited edition collectors set. You can also keep up with Spell Polish on Instagram and Facebook.

What do you think of these? Have you tried Spell Polish before?
