The Digit-al Dozen Does Floral: Day Two, Minimalist Watercolour Daisies

Hi everyone! I'm absolutely in love with the look I created today. If you enjoy subtlety and watercolours, I think you'll be able to appreciate this one. I also did another variation, with a short video, so I'll be posting that later this week.

About this design:

I love watercolour painting, and when I started searching for ideas for this week's prompt, I came across some watercolour paintings of flowers done in a very minimalist style. This design wasn't influenced by any specific artist or work - a Google search for minimalist watercolour flower designs was enough to get me started.

To get this look:

Painting in this style requires a really light hand. Also it's best to have very, very little polish on your brush. The entire design was painted freehand using nail polish. I use nail polish thinner (Seche Restore in this case) to thin the polish and create a watercolour "wash".

The basic technique is this: put down a dab of colour on your nail, and start to paint the flower petals. Clean your brush with acetone, then dip it in clear thinner. Use the thinner on your brush to spread the polish and create a wash. Add touches of other colours if needed - thin them with thinner as well. Don't spend too much time painting your flowers because you will lift the white base. Then you paint in the stem.

Here's a breakdown of the colours I used:
  • Base: Cult Nails Tempest, seal with a quick dry top coat
  • Daisy petals: Zoya Darcy (yellow), with touches of Zoya Thandie (orange)
  • Daisy centres: Zoya Thandie with Essie Partner in Crime (dark brown)
  • Daisy stems: OPI Jade is the New Black, Essie Partner in Crime
  • Background: Zoya Rocky (blue)
  • Top coats: KBShimmer Clearly On Top and Essie Matte About You
  • Brush: Winstonia Store Kolinsky Sable #000

Final thoughts:

Can I just say again how much I love this design? Expect to see more minimalist watercolour designs again, because I really love this look. The daisies were a hard - it's challenging to get the look of the flowers without painting every detail. Instead you're trying to capture the impression of them.
What do you think of this look? Do you love watercolours like I do?
