The Digit-al Dozen Does Countries and Cultures, Day Four: Wycinanki-Inspired Nails

Hi everyone! Papercutting is a fascinating art form. It's practiced in many different cultures, and I love that you have both the traditional papercutting styles, and contemporary artists who have taken it up. Wycinanki is the Polish art of papercutting.

I've been wanting to do Wycinanki-inspired nails for so long - I first thought of the idea when OPI released their Euro Centrale collection but just didn't have the time. Ironically, I used many of the Euro Centrale polishes in this design - the bright and colourful cremes were just perfect for this look.

About this design:

When looking up images of Polish papercutting there were two things that really caught my eye. The first was the fun and bright colours, and the second was the extensive use of floral imagery. So both had to be incorporated into my design. I found this image of Wycinanki on Pinterest that was perfect and used it for this design.

To get this look:

Everything was painted freehand very painstakingly. Here's the full list of polishes and tools used:

  • Base: OPI My Vampire is Buff
  • Green: Nubar Into the Wild and Misa Lime Love
  • Blue: OPI Can't Find My Czechbook and I Saw...U Saw...We Saw...Warsaw
  • Purple: OPI You're Such a BudaPest and Vant to Bite My Neck?
  • Pink and Red: Essie Snap Happy and OPI Suzi's Hungary Again!
  • Orange and Yellow: Models Own Fuzzy Peach, OPI My Paprika is Hotter Than Yours, and Nubar Resort Yellow
  • Brush: JN Dance 24 detail brush from Stylish Nail Art Shop

Overall, I'm very happy with how it turned out. I wasn't able to get all the details you see in the original design, but for freehanded nail art, I think it's pretty darn good! :)

I think this is my favourite look so far from this week's challenge, however, I haven't done a design for day five, so that may change! ;)

What do you think of this design? Are you a fan of papercutting arts?

    1. Thank you! The design itself took about 2 hours. That doesn't include painting the base colour, clean up and adding the top coats. And yes, I used a matte top coat - Cult Nails Wax That. It's my favourite matte top coat.

  7. I love this! I'm always tempted to do papercutting art myself but then I remember how much it makes my hand hurt from the few times that I have tried it haha. These nails are lovely!
