The Digit-al Dozen Does Countries and Cultures, Day Three: Moroccan Doors

Hi everyone! For many, many years I've wanted to travel to Morocco. Maybe it's the photos or the exoticness, because I don't really know much about the country. I'm also one of those people who dreams of traveling and seeing the world, but I never get around to doing it. Trouble is, when I have the money I'm usually working too much, and when I have the time it's because I'm un/underemployed and can't justify spending the money. It's a dilemma I know!

Thankfully there's Pinterest and we can save images of all those exotic places we want to go to, on a "maybe someday" board (or whatever you call it). What did we do before Pinterest? When I was brainstorming ideas for this week's challenge I did a search for Morocco in Pinterest. One thing that stood out was the amount of photos of doors, and that's how this idea came about.

About this design:

There were two things that struck me about these photos of doorways. One, the horseshoe arch shape. That's where the arch is slightly pointed at the top and looks pinched at the sides. The second was the bright colours and variations in decoration. No wonder there's so many photos of Moroccan doors.

I actually did a lot of sketching and planning, trying to decide how to turn the idea of doors into nail art. I originally was going to paint the entire door (one on each nail) but instead I decided to crop them and just show the top. It also is a variation on the half moon design. I like how that turned out.

To get this look:

I painted the entire design freehand using a Winsor & Newton Sceptre Gold II brush, 00 size (you can find them at art stores). These are the polishes I used:
  • Base: OPI My Vampire is Buff
  • Pinky: Amazing Chic School Uniform, Orly Luxe, Girly Bits Walk Like an Egyptian, Cult Nails Tempest
  • Ring: OPI My Paprika is Hotter Than Yours, L'Oreal Not a Cloud In Sight, Orly Luxe
  • Middle: Cult Nails Tempest, Essie Fashion Playground, Amazing Chic School Uniform
  • Index: Models Own Fuzzy Peach, OPI Anti-Bleak, Cult Nails Tempest
  • Shading and darker lines: Amazing Chic School Uniform, Cult Nails Fetish
  • Top coat: KBShimmer Clearly On Top, Cult Nails Wax That

Each nail I drew my inspiration from a different door photo. It looks less cohesive that way, but I don't mind. I rather like the variation here. I have some mixed feelings about the look overall - I'm happy with how it turned out, but I wonder if I could have done better. I do think the planning paid off in making it a stronger design overall.

What do you think of this?
