GOT Polish Challenge: Cone Flowers With Sally Hansen Lightening

Hi everyone! I'm still catching up with the "Golden Oldies Thursday" Challenge. Week three was yellow, so I pulled out one of my favourite and most used yellows...Sally Hansen Lightening.

This yellow I would describe as a perfect "daisy yellow" creme. It's opaque in 2-3 coats, goes on fairly evenly (although mine is starting to thicken because it's been used a lot). The name is a bit odd. For so long I thought it referred to the electrical current in the sky during a storm, but then I realized the spelling didn't match. If you look up the definition for lightening, you will find a very *odd* meaning attached to the term.

Needless to say, I believe the name of the polish is supposed to refer to a mood being "lightened." Why don't they just call it "Better Mood Yellow"? Now instead I will think of uteruses (uteri?) every time I see this colour. :P

About this design:

But I digress. I wanted to paint cone flowers again. My first attempt was during the 31 Day Challenge last year.

Why do I like cone flowers so much? Well they look like dying daisies. Or lazy daisies. As in, "Ugh, these petals, they're so heavy..." I can empathize.

I wanted to use acrylics and do a graphic look. I'm still thinking about the graphic flowers that I did with Illamasqua Gothiqua before my blogging break. But this time I wanted to focus on the line work.

To get this look:

  • Base: OPI My Vampire is Buff, Sally Hansen Lightening
  • Flowers: Sally Hansen Lightening, acrylic paint in Van Dyck Brown
  • Top Coat: None
  • Brush: JN Dance 24 from the Stylish Nail Art Shop

I started with a light wash of the acrylic and sketched in the flowers. Using diluted paint, I also did some dry brush to add some texture. I then did more dry brush with the yellow polish before finishing up with the lines of the cone flowers.

Final thoughts:

I didn't use top coat here because I didn't want to ruin the texture. However, the texture can be distracting in the photos. So I have mixed feelings about this. I also wonder if I should have only painted on 2-3 nails as the design can be a bit busy. But I love the detail, and the lines on this, so overall I'm happy (and my mood has "lightened").

What do you think of this? Do you like cone flowers?

  2. Between the polish inducing thoughts of uteruses/uteri and the mildly depressed talking daisies, this was a great post to read! I love this and your nail art is amazing as always (:

  3. WELL then. I googled the definition and now I'm not sure I can un-learn that... anyway, love the manicure! I happen to really like the texture too.

  6. Hi Meghan,

My preference goes to the middle finger and to the ring finger, more worked and more in agreement with what these flowers inspire you.

When a nail art is an identical motive on every nail, if it’s very sophisticated as this one and even simpler in fact, I clearly prefer only on two/three nails with a reminder on one nail of the other hand. I find that it puts much more the nail art in value, as a jewellery case. And it’s much more discreet and elegant.

Cone flowers ? They are my preferred and my garden’s queens. These Echinacea, do you know that it’s a flower native of US big plains ? And that the best horticulturalist who creates all the hybrids is Terra Nova, world-famous US company ? It’s now a very appreciated flower in France and in the rest of Europe.

Dying daisies or lazy daisies … It’s always interesting and sometimes surprising to see what evokes the same thing for one or several people. I adore these flowers because with their cone/heart very forward, it's as if they advanced on me confidently to create a link which is going to last years.

    1. Hi Claire! Thanks for your comment. I completely agree that I should have only done the design on 2-3 nails. I didn't see it until afterwards. Unfortunately that will have to wait for a different mani! :)

And enjoyed hearing your thoughts on cone flowers. They are one of my favourite flowers even if I do have a different interpretation.
