Aliquid Lacquer, Swatches and Review: Two Pleasant Peninsulas Collection

Hi everyone! Bright colours, and especially neons, are to be expected with summer collections - but the Aliquid Lacquer Two Pleasant Peninsulas Collection is anything but. For a summer collection, it's unique and unexpected, with some really strong colours and finishes.

The Two Pleasant Peninsulas Collection is inspired by the maker, Alison's home state of Michigan. I really love how she translated the various aspects of her home state into polishes. Read on for more details on each one, including the inspiration behind them. At the end of my post I also have a coupon code for you!

Note: I was testing a new top coat on these swatches and unfortunately it caused some slight shrinkage on some of them. The jellies and crellies seemed to be more prone to this, so if your top coat causes this problem, you may want to use something else.
Details on the inspiration behind each polish was provided by Aliquid.

Cherry Festival is a sweet, rather girly, pink crelly with silver and red hexes, and a pink/gold shimmer. The formula was very good and it went on smooth and evenly. This was 3 coats.

Inspiration: "Michigan produces more sour cherries than any other U.S. state (sour cherries are the kind used in pies and preserves). Every July, Traverse City holds a cherry festival that attracts over 500,000 visitors!"

I'm Heading Straight to Mackinac is a beautiful cerulean blue creme with flecks of shimmer and a subtle holo effect. The holo effect is more noticeable in the bottle, less so on the nails. The application on this one was perfect, and I had no issues. I used 3 coats, but you can likely get away with two.

Inspiration: "The two peninsulas of Michigan are separated by the narrow Straits of Mackinac, where Lakes Michigan and Huron meet. The Mackinac Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world, connects the two halves of the state. One of Michigan's top tourist attractions, Mackinac Island, lies just a few miles from the bridge."

Lake Michigan Sunset is a slate grey crelly with a shimmer that has flecks of gold, pink and green. This one leans on the sheerer side but it builds up nicely. I used 3 coats and the formula was good.

Inspiration: "The colors in this polish come from a photo I took on vacation in 2008 in the "pinky" of Michigan's Lower Peninsula."

Motor City is a black jelly with tiny silver/gold flakes, and silver, gold and copper glitter in various sizes, including large circles. I think this is a really interesting combination of glitter, and goes with the idea. I do find these types of jellies to be difficult to apply - it's hard to get an even coat. So I applied this carefully and tried not to load up my brush with too much polish. I used 3 coats here.

People of the Three Fires is a brick red crelly with a blue/pink/coppery shimmer. I found this one to be a tad thick so I used thinner coats. I used 3 coats here.

Inspiration: "Named for the alliance of three closely related Algonquian tribes native to Michigan and neighboring areas: the Ojibwe, Ottawa and Potawatomi. These peoples developed a pictographic writing system to record their history, myths, and medicinal recipes, which continue to be passed on to the next generation."

Petoskey Stone is an interesting pea soup green with golden shimmer - the colour is so hard to pinpoint, it's almost beige. Not only is the colour unique but the application is also excellent. I think this would be great for a work appropriate polish if you wanted something different from the typical nudes. This was 3 coats.

Wolverine Loves Spartan is a white crelly with matte green, blue and yellow hexes. I think this has the perfect base/glitter mix - the base is not too sheer or opaque and it has just the right amount of glitter. But like Motor City, make sure to not load your brush up too much or else you end up with too much glitter. 3 coats here.

Inspiration: "This polish combines the colors of Michigan's two largest universities, Michigan State and the University of Michigan. They may be rivals in real life, but they work together in perfect harmony on your nails!"

Yooper is a gorgeous dark forest green with flecks of blue, green, copper. The colour on this is amazing, and I love the effect of the shimmer. I did find the formula to be a bit too thick so you may have to use thinner on this one. I used 3 coats, but 2 would be enough.

I also received a Lip Balm in Maple Flavor. These are 4grams and are made out of mango butter, beeswax, apricot kernel oil and olive oil. I've been using it for a few days and it's super moisturizing. Also the scent is yummy and reminds me a lot of Tim Hortons maple flavour donuts.

Overall, I think this is a strong collection, there are a few that are a bit thick or challenging to apply, but they are not problematic. For the most part, the formula on each is very strong and the colours and finishes are all unique. I don't think there's one polish here that I already have a dupe of.

My Picks: I'm Heading Straight to Mackinac, Cherry Festival, and Petoskey Stone
