The Neverending Pile Challenge: Day Six, Indie: Grungy Peacock with Nire's Desire

Hi everyone! It's very rare that I'm able to do two posts in one day, but as I told you earlier I'm trying to play catch up with these challenges. So I have another design I did for the Neverending Pile Challenge. I was recently sent some polishes from Erin at Nire's Desire, and for whatever reason I felt that they would make the perfect peacock design.

Grungy peacock feathers

I've done a peacock theme mani before, many months ago with one of the duos from the Dior Birds of Paradise collection. That time the design was stylized, and so this time I was going for more of an arty look. I decided to create a grunge effect as well. I think that will be my new motto: "Grunge all the things!!"

To get this look: On my pinky, index and thumb, I'm wearing Nire's Desire Trans-Atlantic, a deep blackened teal holo. On my middle and ring nails I started with a base of China Glaze Don't Honk Your Thorn. You thought I was going to say My Vampire is Buff, didn't you!? Hahaha fooled you! ;) Actually I'm trying to ween myself off of MViB. I think I have an unhealthy addiction...

I created the grunge border by stumbling and dragging OPI You Don't Know Jacques, followed by a touch of black polish.

For the peacock feather I started with Nire's Desire Pleasure Island, a lighter teal. I drew in the feather, but then used acetone to create a wash effect. I went over it again with Pleasure Island, then defined it with the darker Trans-Atlantic. I used Nire's Desire Drowning in the centre of the feather - just a touch. I then added touches of black polish to the feather where I wanted more definition. The last step was to add a few brushstrokes of gold with Orly Luxe.

I hope that makes sense. Basically, work from light colours to darker colours. Keep it loose in the beginning, then add more definition towards the end.

I love these polishes from Nire's Desire, if you're interested, they're available in her Etsy shop. They are part of the Techno Phase Two collection, and I'll be posting swatches tomorrow, or Saturday at the latest.

What do you think of this design? Have you tried Nire's Desire?

  1. I absolutely love these... Beautiful.... And u cracked me up with the China Glaze Don't Honk your Thorn.... Lmao... I am obsessing over My Vampire is Buff because of your designs... I still don't have it yet... I have tried to find cheaper dupes & have had no luck (which is hard to believe in my 900 plus polish collection).... lol... So I'm just gonna have to break down soon & pay the darn $9 for mvib... Lol... Your design is awesome as always... Your nail art is my biggest inspiration... Look forward to your posts every day.. Can't wait to see what is next...

    1. Thanks so much Rhiannon! What a sweet comment to wake up to. :) And I'm always surprised to hear when someone does not own MViB. Formula-wise it certainly has it's challenges, especially at first - it's a bit thin and takes 3-4 coats for full opacity, but as you use it more, it thickens up a bit and it's down to 2-3 coats. But it's perfect because it's a very neutral colour - with no yellow or pink tones. It's hard to go back to using white after you try it. :)
