The Digit-al Dozen Does Red, Gold, and Green: Day Two: A Classic Holiday Gradient

Hi everyone! You may have noticed (or not!) that I didn't published many posts for The Digit-al Dozen challenge this week. The prompt was red, gold, and green, but because of my work with my day job (teaching assistant) and my dissertation, it was just impossible for me to do any nail art this week. So I have one post for you today, and I'll have one more tomorrow, then I'm giving up on this challenge.

This design is super easy but perfect for the holidays. I've used two Renaissance Custom Lacquer polishes to do a gradient that is very classic and shimmery!

To get this look: I started with a base of RCL Mount Pleasant, a deep green with lighter green shimmer, from The Shimmers collection. I then used a makeup sponge to do a gradient using Mount Pleasant and Runnymede (a red-brown shimmer from the same collection). I topped it off with simple gold studs from the Born Pretty Store.

There's been times I've done gradients and had to go over the gradient five, six or more times because the polishes didn't have good coverage. I'm happy to report here that I got a pretty good gradient in one pass of the makeup sponge. But I did three to give it more depth.

I really love that the colours are a bit muted, not bright red and green. That, along with the shimmer in the polishes and the gold studs, gives this a more classic look that is perfect for the holidays.

What do you think of this? Do you love gradients like me, or do you find them frustrating?

  2. WOW! I love this gradient so hard!! Sometimes reds and greens don't love being in gradients since they're complementary colors and all that, but the transition on this is flawless and beautiful

    1. I know exactly what you mean. I actually find red and green to be a garish combination especially when the colours are so bright, but here I don't mind it as much. :)

  4. Beautiful gradient!! I've tried doing gradients a few times, but I still have not figured out the right way to blend them all together. I love these polishes separately, but you make them look so good together!!

    1. Hi Sara, thanks for your comment, and thanks for leaving your blog link out. The Nailasaurus actually has a great tutorial for gradients. You can find it here: http://www.thenailasaurus.com/2012/04/gradient-nails-picture-tutorial.html

      I hope this helps!

    1. I know isn't it!? I really love doing gradients, just hate the cleanup, cause I'm too lazy to use tape around the nails or anything like that. :P

  6. I was nervous to do a red to green gradient because I was afraid they wouldn't play nice, but you did a great job here! Beautiful!

  7. I've gotten pretty good at 4 color gradients but of similar color scheme-but need to really try something like this with vastly different colors. This is gorgeous!
