Four Weeks of piCture pOlish: Week Four, A Voodoo Ruffian

Hi everyone! This is my last post for this piCture pOlish miniseries. I'll admit that I saved Voodoo for last because initially it didn't really catch my eye like the others. In the bottle it looks like a brown shimmer polish. It wasn't until I swatched this polish that I realized I made a mistake overlooking this one. If you love vampy dark colours, Voodoo definitely deserves a place in your collection.

Voodoo is a dark vampy reddish-brown, but it is much more complex than that. It actually has a jelly-like base, like I've seen with other piCture pOlish shades, but it is definitely a full coverage polish. The base is a burgundy/purplish jelly and it has a smouldering gold/red shimmer. The shimmer causes the overall colour to change which is why this looks like a reddish brown on the nails.

The formula was excellent - it goes on absolutely smooth and is completely self-leveling. I used three coats, but two would work, I was just being very careful with my swatches.

About this design: For the nail art I decided to try my hand at a ruffian design. A ruffian mani is basically a french manicure in reverse. I thought it would be very difficult but it wasn't, it just takes a steady hand. For fun I decided to do a double ruffian on some nails, along with a gradient, to mix things up.

To get this look: I used three polishes for this manicure to keep things simple and unified: Cult Nails Fetish (a black wax-finish polish), China Glaze Gossip Over Gimlets (a silver foil with subtle gold flecks), and of course piCture pOlish Voodoo.

On my three nails I started with a base of Fetish, which is perfect in one coat. On my ring and thumb I started with a base of Voodoo and did a gradient over top with Voodoo and Gossip Over Gimlets.

For the ruffian, I used the brush in the nail polish bottle and carefully painted the second and third layers. Just make sure to not load your brush with too much polish, you don't want to flood your nails. Also I found that skinnier nail polish brushes work better - if you have a bottle with a wide brush, use the side instead.

When I did the second and third layers I did have to go over each twice so that I'd have full coverage. Also if you mess up you can do touch ups with a tiny nail art brush.

Overall, I'm very happy with my ruffian manicure, and I think it's a nice, sophisticated look. And I can't wait to wear Voodoo again, I'm over the moon that the ladies at piCture pOlish sent this to me.

What do you think of this look? Would you try this for a holiday party?

  1. I love this look. That is one gorgeous polish. Picture Polish is my favorite Indie brand, to look at anyway, since I don't own any Indies at all.

  2. I'm not exactly sure why but this polish feels very "you" :) Maybe it's the golden shimmer? Either way, it's beautiful!
