The Digit-al Dozen Does Black & White: Distressed Poppies for Remembrance Day

Hi everyone! Today marks my first official blog post as part of the Digit-al Dozen! The theme for the week is black and white, and since today was Remembrance Day here in Canada, I decided to do something appropriate for this special day. You may be wondering why my design has some red in it, if the theme is black and white. Well let me explain...

Distressed Poppies for Remembrance Day

For the theme of black and white, we were able to interpret this how we chose. I've decided that I'll be occasionally bringing colour into my designs, as long as black and white is the main component. It seemed only logical that a poppy-themed mani on Remembrance Day should have some red in it, hence the accent of red.

About this design: Sometimes I get ideas for nail art and I have no idea where they come from. I was thinking about doing something for Remembrance Day when the idea of doing poppies with a grunge/distressed look popped into my head. The techniques I used for this are very similar to my Ethereal Dreamcatcher nails, so maybe that's how I came up with the idea.

I should add that the distressed look was purely an aesthetic decision - it has nothing to do with my feelings towards Remembrance Day. :)

To get this look: I started with a gradient of black and white polish over a white base. I used Sally Hansen White On and Black Out for this entire design. I then made the distressed surface by dragging polish across each nail using a drybrush technique. I sketched out the poppies and filled them in with white polish, again dragging it lightly across the surface.

I finished this design by adding accents of red (using Joe Fresh Cherry), then sketching out the lines of the poppies with black polish. If any of the black lines needed to be fixed or stood out too much I just painted over them with the white.

I love how forgiving this technique is. If you mess up something, just drag some more polish over it! Also you don't have to worry about smearing with the top coat! ;)

What do you think of this? Do you celebrate Remembrance Day/Veteran's Day?

  8. You do grungy like no other. It's a wonderful technique and it really gives almost a palette-knife feel instead of a dry-brush feel. You know? At any rate, I love these. Welcome to our little troupeau!

  11. These are great! That technique is so unique, I really love it. I like that the poppies are ombred to slowly include more red too, although I think my favorite nail is the ring finger with just a small pop of red.

Welcome to the group, we are so lucky to have a talented girl such as yourself join us! :) Here's to continuing to inspire each other.
