A few weeks ago I bought the new Essie winter collection from Nail Polish Canada. Normally I swatch these as soon as they arrive, but I have so many reviews that I owe, I've had to push it back. But today's challenge is perfect for using some of these polishes. I find that Essie's Shearling Darling collection is perfect for nail art, the colours complement each other so well!

About this design: I drew my inspiration from The Nailasaurus' Nimbus Tutorial. Basically it's a variation on the watercolour technique where you thin the polish with acetone and dot it on with a Q-tip. The Q-tip leaves a round spot with a darker, halo-like edge. It's very dreamy and ethereal looking, and perfect for a winter collection!

To get this look: The Nailasaurus has a very good tutorial, so I encourage you to check it out. I found that having my Q-tip soaked in a lot of acetone made the dots better and more halo-like. I used four polishes from the Essie Shearling Darling Winter collection: Mind Your Mittens, Shearling Darling, Warm & Toasty Turtleneck, and Parka Perfect. I applied the polishes in that exact order - from darkest to lightest - going over it twice with Parka Perfect to blend everything together. My base was OPI My Vampire is Buff.

Overall, I'm very happy with how this turned out. It's rather delicate and subtle looking - perhaps it could even pass as work-appropriate nail art? Oh, and did I mention it's totally easy to do! As much as I love detailed, intricate nail art, it feels good to do something so simple like this.
What do you think of this? Have you checked out The Nailasaurus' Nimbus tutorial?

ReplyDeleteYes, definitely check it out! It's a very easy technique to do, and I like that it doesn't require any special tools. It would also be good as an accent nail.
DeleteNimbus is getting very popular. I think I should try it as well.
ReplyDeleteGreat job :)
Thanks! I'm not surprised it's becoming popular. Sammy has a very popular blog and I find her tutorials are always well done.
DeleteThe colors look so fabulous with this technique! I really love the layering effect, it reminds me a lot of a Monet painting or something similar. Beautiful <3
