Essie Fall 2013 Collection "For The Twill Of It": Swatches and Review

Hi everyone! I'm not quite ready to let go of the fun, bright summer colours. However, when I saw the new Essie fall collection 'For The Twill Of It', I'll admit I was intrigued by the darker, smokier colours. Also, I know that a lot of people found my reviews of this year's neon and summer collections to be helpful, so I broke down and bought this collection from Nail Polish Canada when it became available.

Essie Fall 2013 For The Twill Of It

Some of the polishes from this collection really struck me immediately, while others come across as not too unique. One thing this collection does have going for it is a great formula for all six of them. Whether it's basic cremes, shimmers, or more dramatic duochrome/metallics, I think Essie's Fall 2013 collection has something for everyone.

After School Boy Blazer is a dusty dark blue-black creme. In some lights you can see a hint of blue, but it looks very close to black. It's a nice dark shade for those who do not want to wear a pure black. This was 2 coats and the formula was perfect - smooth and even, with a great consistency. Also a bonus, this was non-staining.

Cashmere Bathrobe is a darker, cool-toned, steel grey with a subtle silver shimmer. There is a hint of iridescent quality to the shimmer when it catches the light, and it's polishes like this that remind me of why I love Essie. I see this as being perfect for when I want something muted but not a nude. This was 2 coats and the formula was flawless - completely self-leveling and perfect coverage.

For The Twill Of It, the namesake of the collection, seems to be the one that has gotten the most attention so far, and I can see why. It's a steel grey duochrome with purple and teal colour shifts. The formula and application was perfect, I used two coats, but almost could have gotten away with one. It goes on very smooth and is completely self-leveling. It's very close to a metallic in finish and formula - the way it provides excellent coverage and dries quickly reminds me of other metallics in my collection. For me, I have nothing like this, so I enjoyed it very much.
Note: Polish Insomniac has done a comparison of Essie For The Twill Of It and OPI Peace, Love & Polish from the new San Francisco collection. This may help you in deciding between the two (if that's an issue). :)

The Lace Is On is a fuchsia-violet with a hot pink shimmer. The colour is so vibrant and vivid, and when the light shines on the polish it has that lit from within look. This is two coats, and again, perfect formula that goes on smooth with very minimal brushstrokes.

Twin Sweater Set is a deep red creme, with pink/magenta tones that are visible in some light conditions - most of the time the magenta undertones are gone and it leans slightly towards a brick red. This was three coats, and the formula was perfect like the others - very smooth and self-leveling - however, it did have a tendency to pool in my cuticles. I don't think this is the most unique colour, but if you are in the mood for a classic red, you might enjoy this.

Vested Interest is a mid-toned green-grey creme. This may appeal to some people but for me, it's not the most flattering colour on my skin tone. I do think this may be interesting as a base polish for a brighter glitter. Like the others, the formula on this was flawless, no signs of brushstrokes or streaks and full coverage in two coats.

I'm curious to hear what you think of this collection. For me, a good formula is key, and I can be a bit forgiving on the colour if the formula is excellent. So in my opinion, this collection is very strong - I think it conveys the idea of classic fashions with something that will appeal to most peoples' tastes. My favourites of the collection are The Lace Is On and For The Twill Of It, with Cashmere Bathrobe coming in as a close third.

Tell me, what's your favourite polish from this collection? Which fall collections are you most excited about?
