Essie Summer 2013 Collection, Swatches and Review!

Hi everyone! Happy (slightly belated) Memorial Day for those of you in the US! I have the latest Essie collection to show you today! It recently arrived at Nail Polish Canada, and I snatched it up as soon as I could. After the disappointment with the 2013 Neon collection, I really had big hopes for this one.

I've been having Internet issues all evening, which has made everything take so much longer. So my notes may not be as detailed as I would like. If you have any questions about a particular polish, make sure to leave a comment. I haven't been so good with keeping up with comments, but I will respond to any questions as soon as I can. Luckily this collection doesn't have issues like the previous one.

Essie Summer 2013 Collection

Full Steam Ahead is a nice warm-toned lavender with a silver shimmer. The shimmer looks like micro-flakes and is quite beautiful. All but one of the polishes in this collection have this kind of shimmer. It was a bit sheer but went on very smooth and evenly. I needed three coats for full coverage. I love the colour on this one, but I don't think it's that unique.

Naughty Nautical is a teal green, slightly muted, with a silver shimmer like Full Steam Ahead. I found this colour to be very unique and beautiful, also flattering. The formula was excellent - it went on smooth and was self-leveling. The only issue I had with this was minor staining, so make sure to wear a base coat. 2 coats for these swatches.

Rock the Boat is a pale dusty blue, leaning towards a cornflower blue. It has the same silver shimmer seen in Full Steam Ahead. This was the colour I was most looking forward to, but it was very sheer. I needed four coats for full coverage, which is very disappointing. On the bright side, the formula was good - it went on very even and was perfectly self-leveling.

Sunday Funday was a difficult colour to capture and my photos are not 100% colour accurate (despite my attempts to colour adjust). This is a muted coral-hot pink, kind of like a salmon pink only a bit darker and a tad brighter. This also has a shimmer to it like the others. I really love this colour, I found it so fun, and it would be great for a summer pedi. This also has a great formula, very smooth and self-leveling. It was sheer at first but built up well. 3 coats.

The Girls Are Out is a warm purple. It has a shimmer like Full Steam Ahead and the others. This is a great colour, very flattering on my skin tone, and the type of colour I normally gravitate towards. The formula was excellent and it went on very smooth and even. 2 coats.

The More The Merrier is a lime green creme. This is the only one of the collection that doesn't have a shimmer. I quite like this colour and the formula was great. It went on very smooth and was completely self-leveling. 2 coats here.

Overall, I'm very happy with this collection. The colours are fun, and most of them are unique in my stash. Since Essie normally does cremes, I am really loving the shimmer in these ones. Rock the Boat is a bit of a disappointment because it is so sheer, but otherwise, the formula on all of these is excellent. I really had no issues with them at all.

What do you think of this collection? Any colours stand out to you?

  1. Such fun summer colours! I like how the shimmer gives them that little something extra. Shame that Rock the Boat is so sheer. It looks like a wonderful shade of blue.

  2. Hello! I really like lavender, green and the dusty pale blue. The others are not bad but my mood is for pastel colors right now! ^_^

  5. I have been looking at SO many swatches of these and your are the only ones that have made me want these colours. Sort of found the collection a bit boring. Your swatches acctually changed that, a bit.

Now I WANT Naughty Nautical! :D

    1. I don't have Bikini So Teeny but I have a feeling that they are close. I read that BST also had a poor formula.

And thanks re: the blog name. I never know if people like it or not.

    1. Lol! I think you're one of the few who does not like the shimmer, but that's cool! And good choice, Naughty Nautical is a great polish - the colour and the formula.

  9. These are all beautiful, but there is not one that really calls to me. Rock the Boat and Full Steam Ahead are my favourites though. Good to know that the formulas were better than the neon collection - well except for Rock the Boat.

    1. That's too bad, but great for your wallet!! If every polish spoke to you, you would be in big trouble!! I find myself that I am becoming more selective, I bought the entire collection mainly for the blog (and I liked them too).

  10. I just bought The girls are out..... Now I'm wondering if its too similar to dj play that song from the neon collection..... Do you own that one?

    1. Hi, yes I do. You can see my swatches here: http://willpaintnailsforfood.blogspot.ca/2013/05/essie-neon-collection-2013-dj-play-that.html

The Girls Are Out is more of a warm toned purple than DJ Play That Song. Also it has the shimmer which you don't see in the neon collection. And DJ Play that Song is more of a jelly that is meant to be layered over white, while The Girls Are Out can be worn on it's own - the formula on the two is very different! I hope this helps! :)
