Nicole by OPI Selena Gomez, My Picks: Part I

Hi everyone! Tonight I have some swatches from the Selena Gomez collection that recently came out. I'm not a fan of Selena Gomez (sorry!), not that I have anything against her, it just seems that her work targets a younger age group. But when I went into Shoppers around Christmas and saw the brand new display, I couldn't resist picking up a few. There's 14 in the collection, and I ended up getting five of them. Today I'll be showing three: Selena, Inner Sparkle, and Scarlett.

But first I wanted to explain why I went MIA with the blog yesterday. Feel free to skip down to the swatches if you're not interested. Last night I decided that I was going to set up a Facebook page for this blog. It seemed like such a no-brainer, I mean that's what you do when you set up a blog - eventually you venture into various social media platforms in order to get the word out and make your blog "better." Except trying to set up the page was a complete fiasco. It was so confusing, I couldn't set it up correctly, and then I gave up after about four hours and deleted everything. To make matters worse it prompted a blogger identity crisis. I started thinking to myself: "Why do I need a Facebook page, will it make me a better blogger?""Isn't this just going to take time away from producing better content?" Ugh!! So I haven't decided whether or not I'll try again with the Facebook page. But I'm interested in hearing from other bloggers who have Twitter, Facebook, or other social media accounts. Do you find it useful/rewarding/worthwhile?

Anyways, so back to the Selena Gomez collection! I've started to get into Nicole by OPI after ignoring them for awhile. For the most part I was really happy with the ones I picked out, but I didn't really feel the need to own more polishes out of this collection.

Selena: This is a really unusual polish for me, I tend not to pick out colours like this, but it caught my attention. It's a pale peachy pink with a very subtle shimmer. The shimmer is not very visible but does give the polish a luminosity. However, I wasn't really a fan of this when it was on my nails. First, I found the formula to be difficult. It was very thin, prone to pooling in the cuticles, and very streaky. This is three coats and there are still thin patches. Second, it's not the most flattering colour on me. It makes me feel like I have Barbie hands.

Inner Sparkle: This is a clear-based glitter topper. I really recommend wearing it over another colour. For these swatches, I used a makeup sponge to do a gradient over Selena. It has tiny gold hex glitter, and two sizes of pink and lavender hex glitter. I don't know if it's the most unique polish, but it has a good formula and great glitter payoff for layering over another polish.

Scarlett: I must have been in a daring mood when I bought these polishes, because this is also another polish that I don't usually go for. But I'm glad I picked this one up, not only it is really interesting, but it also has a great formula. It's an intense red-coral-fuchsia with a fiery red-gold shimmer. It almost seems like the shimmer is glass flecks because it is so bright. In the light box this polish has somewhat of a duochrome effect, but it also looks a bit flat. In real life this polish has a nice depth and glow to it. The formula was also excellent - this was two coats with excellent coverage and no issues of pooling or streaking.

So what do you think of this collection? Did you buy any of the Selena Gomez polishes?

  1. Gorgeous swatches as usual! I just don't do Facebook... ( professional reasons) That being said though, a FB page is equal work to a blog... I like Twitter ( which I am recently linking to my blog) because it's a fast and easy call out to my blog. Also, a lot of blogs network using hashtags and I find that you can customize the page to visually link to your blog better...

    1. Elena, thank you for the suggestion and feedback. I'm on Instagram now, but it is time consuming uploading photos and checking out what other people are up to. I can see then how the Facebook page would be a lot of work as you said. Twitter is completely foreign to me, but I'll check it out and see how other people are using it. :)

    1. I totally understand! I'll admit, a small part of my decision in buying them was that I thought it would be nice to show something new on the blog. When I tried them on I liked them even more of course. But there were quite a few in this collection that I didn't like, or I thought they were very ordinary and couldn't justify spending $11 on them.
